      Talking about Reading

Do you remember how you learned to read? Reading is something we learn as children and is important in so many aspects of our lives. For some, reading is a pleasure, for others a struggle. This event will be of interest to anyone who would like to understand how we learn to read and ways to support children’s reading, including parents and professionals, children and young people. Through posters, activities and interactive talks, the audience will be introduced to the process of learning to read and the skills needed for fluent reading. You will be taught a new written language and find out that although learning about letter sounds (phonics) is important, it is not enough for reading success. You will find out more about the role of language in our understanding of the written word and discover fun ways to help children learn new words. Finally, you will hear about recent research that has used a new approach to teaching reading to deaf and hearing children. Sign language interpreters will be available to provide access to deaf participants.
