Spanish Book Club (October) - with Tapas and Wine

Join our Spanish Book Club once a month, where we discuss contemporary and classic books in Spanish, whilst enjoying delicious food and drink from the author's country of birth. For October we will be reading the short stories in Los Jefes/Los Cachorros by the legendary Peruvian author, Mario Vargas Llosa. WHAT'S INCLUDED: The participation fee includes an e-copy of the book, tapas, and a session co-ordinated by our experienced tutor, Luis. The book club is held by the school, Spanish Marks, and all proceeds are going to the charity, Asocaicion Fatima based in Guatemala. The maximum number of participants is 12, so we recommend to book today as there is great demand! EVENT DESCRIPTION: We have a relaxed atmosphere, with most of the discussion in Spanish. It is an event for those who love literature and Spanish, and want to spend an evening discussing the chosen book, whilst enjoying light bites and a glass of wine. It is not a language lesson, but an informal discussion about the book and it's themes, allowing you to practice Spanish in a warm, friendly and culturally-rich setting! Receive a PDF copy of Los Jefes/Los Cachorros when you purchase a ticket, so you can read it in advance. We will email the book directly to you! ABOUT LOS JEFES/LOS CACHORROS AND LEVEL OF SPANISH: Los Jefes/Los Cachorros is made up of seven short stories written by Mario Vargas Llosa when he was 22 years old. The book took  the literary circles by surprise, which until then, knew Vargas Llosa only as a journalist and an aspiring dramatist. Many of the technical and narrative elements that characterise the prose of the great Peruvian writer first appeared in these stories. Los Jefes/Los Cachorros introduces us to the suggestive world that Vargas Llosa has been able to create and develop for almost half a century and that has placed him at the highest peak of Spanish literature of our time. The seven stories are: Los Jefes: the story deals with the history of a student strike that takes place in a Peruvian school. The narrative tension is masterful and there is a double rivalry in the story, that between the students and the teachers, but also between the students themselves El desafío: the story of a knife duel between a young teenager and an adult who, after a dispute in a bar, They decide to face each other in a knife duel, at night, on a beach.  The ending holds an additional surprise that increases the intensity and emotion of this magnificent story. El abuelo: tells the story of an old man who wants to play a joke on his grandson, scare him with a skull Día domingo: Here is the story of two young people who fight for the love of the same girl. As neither of them wants to give in, they decide by common agreement that the one who loses in a kind of resistance duel will retire. El hermano menor:  the story of two brothers who go out in search of a servant, who supposedly abused their sister.  Un visitante: The story is about an inmate who arrives at an inn to help the police arrest a criminal named Numa. Los Cachorros: this story tells the unfortunate story of a student named Cuellar, who in an accident is bitten by a dog in his genitals, being castrated and impotent for the rest of his days. It teaches us that loneliness and death lurk where one least expected. We recommend you attend this event if you have intermediate or above level of Spanish. All discussion will be in Spanish. FUTURE EVENTS: The book club is held once a month, with a different book each month. We change the country, theme and style of literature, and always choose highly acclaimed books by great authors. ¡Esperamos verte pronto! 1.0.0.20 1.0.0.20
