River Fleet - Valley of Wells

Come and discover the myths and legends of early London; visiting sacred wells and ancient churches, hear stories of Gods and Goddesses, Royalty and Saints, great battles and holy springs. This storywalk follows the course of the River Fleet through the Valley of Wells from St Pancras Old Church (England's oldest church) to Clerk's Well on the edge of the old city of london, exploring the history of Kings Cross. The River Fleet once flowed from Hampstead Heath down to the Thames at Blackfriars. It was once a sacred river full of healing wells, but as London expanded it became clogged with silt and refuse, and its descriptions developed into a stinking ditch, and then a sewer. The river now runs below London encased in piping to the Fleet sewer, most of the flow is redirected to the Hackney Marshes River Story Walks exploring London’s Rivers (buried and flowing), weaving mythology, landscape and lived experience to explore the role of water in contemporary society and connecting with the layers of history, ritual and myth lying beneath our feet.  On the Day.... We will be meeting at Old St Pancras Church at 6.30 pm and we will finish at the Clerk's Well at 8.30pm. While we will be stopping regularly to hear and discuss stories we will be on our feet for the full two hours which is more tiring than it sounds, please ensure you are comfortable walking 4 miles and wearing suitable clothing for the weather. This walk is led by artist, storyteller and Deep Listening Facilitator Beckie Leach McDonald. Beckie leads regular story walks and Deep Listening workshops, you can find details of these here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/becleachart/events/ These walks include some content that is not suitable for children and are not recommended for audiences under the age of 14.
