Ghostsigns of Holloway – hand-painted history on the walls of N7

Let's go on a ghost hunt... Come and investigate some ghosted or faded signs of the past, that are today commonly referred to as 'ghostsigns' – faded, ghosted signs of products or companies that are no longer relevant to that site. There is a very good cross-section of ghostsigns the London N7 area, especially along Holloway Road, a major route from the City of London to The North – a perfect conduit for advertisements and signage.  Wall ads such as these were commissioned both by well-known companies to sell their branded products and by local businesses keen to attract passing trade. The signs would have been hand-painted by specialist, skilled craftsmen, often using the lines in the brickwork as guides for the size of the letterforms as shown in the example I have created for this header pic (which uses part of an old sign that you will see along the tour). We will look at more than ten examples – you'll hear about the businesses, brands and people behind the signs, and we'll discuss other types of ghost signs of the past along the way. The walk lasts 90 minutes and finishes less than five minutes' walk from Highbury Corner, convenient for many bus services and Highbury and Islington tube station. .......................................
