      The Future of Journalism

We are launching our new annual magazine with a debate about the future of journalism.

Journalism as we know it is facing crisis. Media budgets have been squeezed as appetites for free on-demand content have become ever more rapacious. Smartphones, social media accounts and blog platforms have made us all journalists (of sorts) while accusations of fake news, and scandals surrounding phone hacking, have undermined people’s trust in the traditional media.

How can journalism respond to these challenges? What does the future of journalism hold?

In our debate, we will put these big questions to the journalists on the front-line of the battle to keep journalism alive. We will also ask more specific questions

Has declining trust in journalism directly led to rising populism?

Do foreign correspondents still have a legitimate role to play in telling the news?

How might emerging technologies - such as AI and VR - reshape the sector as we know it?

      Joining us we have:

Jerome Starkey - the Times foreign correspondent for Afghanistan and East Africa between 2007 and 2017. Jerome has recently left The Times to work on a book about the war in Afghanistan.

Michael Stothard - the former Financial Times correspondent for France and Spain. He has recently become the Editor, of Sifted, a new media site, backed by the Financial Times, covering innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe.

Our final speaker will be confirmed closer to the date.
