Part of Classical Season 2020/21
Elgar’s choral masterpiece unfurls its wings with the Bach Choir and the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by David Hill.
‘This is the best of me’ wrote Elgar of his profoundly human setting of Cardinal Newman’s poem about the soul’s journey from life into death.
The poem was well known when the composer set it to music in 1900. The result has been hailed as the greatest choral work by an English composer.
In this performance, mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately (‘excellent’ Financial Times) sings the angel. Tenor Andrew Staples ‘youthful and confident’ (The New York Times) sings Gerontius.
Bass-baritone Neal Davis (‘the pick of the bunch’ Seen and Heard) sings the Priest and the Angel of the Agony.
Founded in 1876, the Bach Choir has been described by The Evening Standard as ‘probably the finest independent choir in the world.’
