Earth Science, Health, and Wellbeing (GfGD 7th Annual Conference)

Earth Science, Health and Wellbeing, and Sustainable Development Understanding, managing and improving the natural environment is essential to improving human health and wellbeing around the world (Sustainable Development Goal 3), which in turn underpins many of the other Sustainable Development Goals. Conversely, environmental degradation threatens improvements made in health in recent years. Improving health and wellbeing includes: Improving access to good nutrition. Reducing non-communicable diseases, such as cancers. Tackling communicable illnesses, such as diarrhoea. Improving access to mental health support. Reducing losses and injuries during environmental shocks.  This requires integrated approaches to reduce air, water and soil pollution, understanding of environmental drivers of disease, and better managment of all forms of waste (e.g., from extractive industries, cities, and agriculture).  The 7th GfGD Annual Conference will explore how Earth and environmental science can help to deliver SDG 3, and other linked SDG targets. Bringing together speakers from diverse sectors and disciplines, we aim to increase understanding of the spectrum of work and research opportunities for those interested in the interface between Earth science, health and sustainable development.   This conference is open to all, irrespective of disciplinary background, career stage, or sector. A valued characteristic of GfGD Annual Conferences is the space we create for students and senior members of the profession to exchange ideas, and meet others from different backgrounds. The meeting will have an opportunity for you to meet others passionate about Earth science and sustainable development. The 7th GfGD Annual Conference will take place on Friday 15th November, hosted by the Geological Society of London (Burlington House, London). Sessions and Speakers include: Geoscience and Health – Current Research and Professional Practice Professor Jane Entwistle (University of Northumbria/Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health): Dust, Dirt and Diet - Geochemistry in Human Health Risk Assessment Alexandra Mitchell (Wardell Armstrong): Mining Operations and Health Professor Ilan Kelman (University College London): Climate Change Impacts on Mental Health Geraint Burrows: Founder/Chief Executive Officer (to be confirmed) Resilient Communities – Geohazards, Health, and Reducing the Impacts of Disasters Kevin Blanchard (DRR Dynamics Ltd) Professor Claire Horwell (Durham University/International Volcanic Health Hazard Network) Cecilia Reed (Creative Earth Science Communicator) Student Micro-Presentation Competition.
