      Daniell Lecture

Daniell Lecture 2019 Guest Speaker: Professor Saiful Islam, Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of Bath. Our Daniell Lectures are delivered by internationally renowned scientists and cover a topic of current interest and excitement. Speakers are chosen not only for their outstanding contribution to modern scientific knowledge, but also for their ability to communicate the essence of their research to a young audience. This lecture is aimed at teachers and school students from the ages of 15 - 18 who are interested in studying Chemistry at university. This year, we are delighted to invite award-winning Professor Saiful Islam, who is Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of Bath. He was also the 2016 Royal Institution Christmas Lecturer and has won the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2013-2018), the RSC Sustainable Energy Award (2013) and the RSC Materials Chemistry Lecturer Award (2011). Prior to Professor Islam's lecture, we will host tours to show prospective students King's College London’s undergraduate teaching labs and instruments, with some simple experiments available for students to try. Schedule: 16:00 – 17:00: Arrival and reception in the Franklin-Wilkins Building. Lab tours available for those that have booked tour tickets. 17:00 – 18:00: Lecture by Professor Saiful Islam- Atomic-Scale Insights into Green Energy Materials (Batteries Included) 18.00: Close Tours are only available for those that have booked tour tickets. If you have booked lecture only tickets, you are welcome to attend the reception but please note the lecture does not start until 17.00. The Daniell Lecture is delivered by the Department of Chemistry at King's, and sponsored by the Chilterns & Middlesex branch of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Since its genesis in 1995, this lecture series is in memory of John Frederic Daniell, who was appointed the first Professor of Chemistry at King’s College London. The first chemical laboratory was founded a few years later in 1834. Daniell remained at King's until 1845 and in 1846 the Daniell Scholarship was founded in his honour. Daniell invented the first electrochemical cell, laying down the foundations of the study of electrochemistry and hence influencing the study of Physical Chemistry. Today, the cell named after him, the ‘Daniell Cell’, can be found in Chemistry text books in schools and colleges the world over. Please note that everyone who attends the Daniell Lecture needs their own individual ticket. This is essential for health and safety purposes.
