Concrete Lates: Theon Cross, DJ Spinna, Donna Leake

      Part of Concrete Lates

A collaboration with Boiler Room and EFG London Jazz Festival connects the dots between club culture and contemporary jazz.

The mercurial talent of Theon Cross is brought into sharp focus, performing on the night with a full live band. A key member of UK jazz renegades Sons of Kemet, Cross brings a distinctive, swaggering approach to playing the tuba.

His high-energy style prismically reflects London’s vast musical underground, brushing on grime, dub, soca, and other sounds from the Afro-Carribean diaspora.

Joining Cross on the night are two highly acclaimed DJs with jazz running through their veins. The legendary DJ Spinna blesses the dancefloor with selections across the spectrum of hip-hop, disco, funk, jazz and house music.

Having cut his teeth as a producer for an array of that era’s lyrical giants, including Eminem, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch and De La Soul, Spinna went on to revive and revise jazz and joul marvels like Donald Byrd, Eddie Kendricks, Betty Carter, Roy Ayers and Al Jarreau.

Setting levels on the night is Donna Leake, one of London’s most acclaimed selectors thanks to her long-running stint as a Brilliant Corners resident and a must-listen monthly show on NTS.

In partnership with Boiler Room and EFG London Jazz Festival.

As one of the stalwarts of the London jazz scene, tuba player and composer Theon Cross has been dominating airwaves and stages recently.

Having made a name for himself both as a member of the Mercury-nominated and award-winning quartet Sons of Kemet, as well as his own powerful and eclectic solo material, the last few years have seen Cross appear on a number of highly acclaimed releases including the lauded We Out Here compilation via Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings.

He has also performed with the likes of Kano, Moses Boyd, Makaya McCraven, Jon Batiste, Pharoahe Monch and Courtney Pine, and is a permanent fixture in south London-based collective Steam Down.

Cross also leads his own powerful and eclectic group where he’s flanked by other strong emerging voices on the current London scene: tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia and drummer Moses Boyd.

His debut release Aspirations was one of the most impactful of 2015, gaining him nominations including Best Instrumentalist of the year from Jazz FM Awards. Now, Cross is gearing up to release his highly anticipated debut album Fyah.

As a young man, Cross practised and performed with Southbank Centre Creative Learning Partners Kinetika Bloco and Tomorrow's Warriors.
