      Caccia Lontana

Istrian National Theatre Pula and Croatian National Theatre present the UK premiere of Caccia Lontana: an opera of courtly intrigue and forbidden love by Croatian-Italian composer Antonio Smareglia. A rare chance to experience this recently rediscovered work in a critically acclaimed production: "two fantastic singers, soprano Jelena Štefanić and mezzo-soprano Sofija Cingula, present the sweetness and melodiousness of youthful Smareglia's work...Smareglia truly is an 'Istrian pearl'." (Kritikaz)

Caccia Lontana is a one-act chamber opera by lesser known composer Antonio Smareglia. Drawing influence from both the 19th-century Italian opera and Austro-German music traditions, this 1875 work’s highlights include a cheerful, Mendelssohn-like prelude, troubadour style Ballatas, flirtatious operetta and broad, beautiful vocal writing reminiscent of Puccini.

The story tells of the forbidden love between the young servant boy Fiordaliso and Madonna Bella, the Lady of the court. From gentle seduction to passionate union, Caccia Lontana shows the development of their forbidden and idealistic form of love.

Antonio Smareglia was born in Croatia and educated in Italy and Austria. Because of the complex situation in Europe at that time - the formation of national states and, consequently, national musical styles - Smareglia was neither Italian, Austrian or Croatian enough to be recognized and promoted through political structures. As his changing style often left contemporary audiences puzzled, his works, even when performed in large halls and conducted by great conductors (Metropolitan Opera, Arturo Toscanini, for example), were not always understood and he slowly fell out of the mainstream opera world. But Antonio Smareglia’s works have recently experienced a renaissance and have been performed at La Scala, La Fenice Venice, Prague, Dresden and The Metropolitan Opera.

We are proud to introduce this composer to the UK audience at this year's Opera in the City Festival. The evening will show the performance of Caccia Lontana (approx 40 minutes) followed by a documentary (approx 20 minutes) about composer Antonio Smareglia, created by Draen Krešić and Julia Klier for Droolia UFO.

Performed in Italian with English surtitles. This production was first performed on 22nd November 2018 at INT Pula, Croatia, followed by the CNT Varazdin premiere on 2nd February 2019.

Part of Opera in the City Festival - London's new summer opera festival from 20th August - 7th September at Bridewell Theatre.

      Cost: From £18 to £22
