British Computer Society - Roger Needham Lecture

This is an annual lecture where the winner of the BCS Roger Needham Award is given an opportunity to give a public lecture on their work. The lecture is held at The Royal Society, London. The Roger Needham Award is sponsored by Microsoft Research Cambridge and established in memory of the late Professor Roger Needham.

The award, for outstanding British computer research (part of the BCS’s remit to encourage and recognise personal endeavour in computer science), is for a distinguished research contribution in computer science by a UK-based researcher within ten years of their PhD.

The goal of Semantic Web research is to transform the Web from a linked document repository into a distributed knowledge base and application platform. Key to the realisation of this goal is the use of ontologies to capture knowledge that will help automated processes to better understand and exploit Web content.
