Book Launch: The Last Veit Simons from Berlin

The Wiener Holocaust Library is pleased to launch the publication of The Last Veit Simons from Berlin: Holocaust, Gender, and the End of the German-Jewish Bourgeoisie by Anna Hájková & Maria von der Heydt. Anna Hájková and Maria von der Heydt will discuss their book, which tells the dramatic history of family Veit Simon, which belonged among the oldest and best known Berlin Jewish families. The authors show how the Holocaust destroyed any prospects for the future, the social environment, livelihoods, and eventually bare existence. In spite of their former wealth, they were deported and murdered in Auschwitz and Theresienstadt. Some family members emigrated, stepping into an uncertain and deprived future in England. The one to survive the camps was Etta. Her adaptation skills even under the most adverse of circumstances in Theresienstadt Ghetto sheds new light on gender and the genocide. About the speakers: Anna Hájkovis Associate Professor at Warwick History. Hájková's book manuscript, The Last Ghetto: An Everyday History of Theresienstadt, was awarded the Irma Rosenberg and Herbert Steiner Prize. Her research focusses on examining the society in the camps, Jewish social and political elites, issues of nationalism and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and also the Jewish Councils.  Maria von der Heydt is an Affiliated researcher at the Center for Anti-Semitism Research in Berlin and a partner of the Berlin law firm Heinichen & Laudien. She is researching the German "Applicants" in the Holocaust.
