      Anita Wardell celebrates the music of Betty “Bebop” Carter

      Betty Carter (May16 1930- September 28th 1998) "an amazing vocal improvising singer and interpreter of lyrics and melodies and an inspiration to so many aspiring jazz vocalists- loved by instrumentalists”. With a great love for vocal  improvisation, Anita has been inspired by Betty Carter’s  exciting style of her music since embarking on her jazz journey. Anita will be exploring and performing the music of Betty Carter from some of her quintessential Albums such as “Social Call” songs include- Social Call, Thou Swell "Dropping Things” Dropping Things “ The Audience with- Trolley song, Tight, My Favourite Things, surry with Fringe On Top  and  “Inside Betty Carter”  This Is always,  spring can really hang you up the most, Beware my Heart “ Feed The fire- sometimes I’m Happy,  II Should Lose You. Anita will be interacting with her band and and drawing on the spirit and the excitement of Betty Carter and her Musicians. Anita’s Band will be Robin Aspland- Piano, Jez Brown- Bass and Steve Brown- Drums. Anita is really looking forward to this Project and Delving into the Artistry of this risk taking and musically exciting performer. Anita Wardell, is noted for her mesmerizing and captivating vocal improvisations and vocalese lyrics to instrumental solos. Anita is a musician who uses the voice as her instrument, displaying precision and agility, mixed with heartfelt emotion.

      Her newest release "The Road"  2013 showcases Anita's agility and precision through a voice that soars like a finely tuned instrument. Pianist and long time collaborator Robin Aspland's inventive re-workings of standards such as "You're My Thrill," "Surrey With The Fringe On Top" and "Without A Song" leave room for some exciting and swinging improvisations - whilst Stevie Wonder's "Superwoman," Bobby Hutcherson's "Mirrors" and Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays' "Travels" show a more contemporary side of Wardell". 

      Anita has now relocated to Adelaide, Australia and holds the position of Jazz vocal Lecturer at Adelaide University.  She performs regularly on the Australian circuit as well touring the UK twice each year and the USA.
