Running with the Flame is a presentation of traditional folk songs in a jazz style celebrating the global themes of spirituality, injustice, and love. In addition to melody, rhythmic concepts, and the use of various harmonic scales, the representation of well known instruments within certain cultures will be explored. The music will inspire audience to understand their own heritage and traditions whilst at the same time inviting them to experience those of other cultures.

Multi-award winning New Orleans trumpeter and vocalist, Abram Wilson, is one of the leading jazz trumpeters in the UK today. ABRAM WILSON BIOGRAPHY

Multi-award winning New Orleans trumpeter and vocalist, Abram Wilson, is one of the leading jazz trumpeters in the UK today. Wilson’s passion for music began at the widely recognised New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) whose alumni include Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr. At NOCCA Wilson studied both jazz and classical trumpet. When he was 17 years old he won a music scholarship to Ohio Wesleyan University where he studied music education specialising in classical trumpet.

Wilson then went on to do a masters degree at the world renowned Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. After graduating from Eastman, he moved to New York City where he toured the East Coast with his new band, the Abram Wilson Quintet. He also performed with members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Roy Hargrove Big Band and rhythm and blues legend, Ruth Brown.

In 2002, Wilson moved to London where he quickly became one of the fastest rising stars on the scene performing and touring with renowned jazz artists such as Soweto Kinch, Julian Joseph, Denys Baptiste and Gary Crosby. To date he has recorded and toured three albums to critical acclaim: Jazz Warrior (2005); Ride! Ferris Wheel to the Modern Day Delta (2007), a Jerwood Rising Star commission for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival; and Life Paintings (2009). His albums have led to a clutch of awards and nominations including winner of the BBC Jazz Award for Best Band (2004), the International Songwriting Competition (2006) and the British Jazz Award for Best New CD (2007).

Wilson continues to be a prolific composer who has matured to reveal a strong focus on melodicism and African rhythmic consistency in his music. With trumpet playing reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, and Wynton Marsalis and the vocals of Sammy Davis Jr. and Chet Baker, Wilson has created a unique and captivating style of melodic compositions that swing and groove. Charismatic on stage and off, Abram Wilson’s musicality exudes warmth, passion, virtuosity and soul.
