Shut Up and Write: Day Long Retreat

Please note that this session is open to research students at Birkbeck, University of London only. What is Shut Up and Write? 'Shut Up and Write' offers Birkbeck Research Students a structured setting in which to write up research in the company of others. This session is aimed at those who would like to set aside a whole day for writing, and will run from 9:00am to 5:00pm.  We will provide breakfast pastries at the start of the session and tea and coffee throughout. Unlike at previous sessions, we will not be providing lunch; this is in response to student feedback that asked for more regular sessions, even if that meant foregoing catering. The aims and structure of the Day Long Retreat are based on those described in the Thesis Whisperer blog, encompassing a series of focussed 25-minute writing sessions, followed by brief 5-minute breaks (with longer breaks every couple of hours). During the breaks you can relax, speak with other students, and enjoy a tea or coffee. During the writing sessions you will be asked to switch off your phone, stay silent, and avoid the temptation to do anything other than work on your research. Those wishing to take part should plan to attend the whole session, from 9AM – 5:00PM. By the end of the session you will have dedicated time to writing in an intensive way, and hopefully have made connections with other research students.  What should I bring? You should bring any piece of work that you would like to focus on, as well as your chosen means of writing, whether that is a laptop (with charger!), tablet, or pen and paper.
