      London History Forum: Navigating Challenging Seas

Curriculum and examination reform, British Values, austerity and budgets, the Prevent Strategy, controversial and difficult histories, SLT priorities, inclusion…as teachers we know all of these treacherous seas, and navigating them can feel extremely difficult. This London History Forum will show you how to tackle some of these issues and enable you to sail through the eye of the storm in a strong and stable ship. Featuring a keynote lecture from Dr Tom Davies (University of Sussex) looking at issues of race in teaching history plus a range of great workshops, this is a must for your CPD calendar. Programme: 4.00-4.45pm – Registration 4.45-5.30pm – Keynote lecture: Dr Tom Davies, lecturer in American history, University of Sussex: Race and teaching history: thoughts and approaches 5.30-5.45pm – comfort break and refreshments 5.45-6.45pm – Workshop 1 Primary: Helen Crawford, Senior Lecturer in Primary Education at the University of Northampton: No history budget? Getting the most out of a single image In this session we will explore how children view and interpret images. We will be investigating a range of activities which show how you can use historical images to develop teaching and learning in your classroom at no extra cost! Secondary: Dr Katharine Burn and Dr Jason Todd, University of Oxford PGCE and HA secondary committee: Putting women at the centre of history. The approach of the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act is a good time to take stock of the place of women in history. This workshop aims to address both the representation and positioning of women in the school history curriculum. Focusing on the lives of ten individual women, from a range of different periods and backgrounds, each with a fascinating story to tell, it seeks to integrate them into the main events and debates of the period in which they lived.  The case studies could be used individually or within a longer story of change and continuity, helping Key Stage 3 students to prepare for the conceptual demands of the new GCSE thematic studies. 6.45-7.00pm – Comfort break 7.00-8.00pm – Workshop 2 Primary: Steve Davy, teacher at Hillyfield Academy, London and HA primary committee: The Trojan Horse: bringing out rich primary history through literacy  Is history low priority in your school? Do literacy outcomes conquer all? This is the reality of the challenge that many primary teachers face. Steve Davy takes us on his own school journey of meeting the challenge of providing rich and exciting history education and outcomes for pupils when literacy reigns. Please be prepared to share your own examples and experiences too to create a group led package of strategies and ideas aimed at overcoming the challenge of providing rich history outcomes when your school prioritises literacy.   Secondary: Jerome Freeman, Former history teacher, QCA national history adviser, and consultant to the UCL-IOE 9/11 education programme: Why do we remember the events of 9/11? How to help your students begin to make sense of 9/11 nearly two decades on. None of your Key Stage 3 students would have been alive on the 11th September 2001 so won't share the vivid memories of this horrific event in the way that we do. However, its impact is still being felt across the globe including on their own lives. This workshop aims to provide some practical approaches to help students understand what happened, why it happened, and begin to assess its historical significance. In addition, strategies for tackling the more sensitive and emotive aspects of this topic will be provided. Close
