Dr Dee - An English Opera

Damon Albarn invites you into the weirdly wonderful world of Dr Dee, astrologer, alchemist, magician and spy. Unbelievably, this is not a fictitious character drummed up in the deep subconscious of Albarn's mind. The man in question was an influential 16th century Englishman, an advisor to Elizabeth I. He is credited with inventing the concept of the British Empire, developing maps, and (successfully) putting a hex on the Spanish Armada. Shakespeare's Prospero, King Lear and Marlowe's Doctor Faustus are all believed to be inspired by the great man himself. So it's easy to see why the Blur and Gorillaz musician Damon Albarn based his latest project around the fascinating figure. Fresh from his success with Africa Express and Monkey Albarn embarked on an operatic show full of Dr Dee themes, science, study and sorcery. Dr Dee opened at the Manchester International Festival and received glowing reports; it now opens in London at the London Coliseum. Don't expect ruffle necks and tights in this production. Dr Dee is a modern musical masterpiece with stunning staging by Rufus Norris, drawing upon the workings of an Elizabethan masque, paired with a haunting intellectual score written and performed by Albarn.
